Description: Here is another rare older mineral specimen which was formerly in the Francis Hueber mineral collection. Partially etched, lustrous, and "wine red"(!!) Scheelite crystals, with Zinnwaldite(a now discredited Mica variety) and Quartz. The crystals are not large, but ecellent and unusual for the species. The specimen is from Cinocev(formerly Zinnwald), in the ore mountains(Erzgebirge), on the border with the Czech Republic and Germany. This area used to be rich in mines, many types of metal were mined, Sliver was a main goal, but other metals were found as well.... Mines went back to the 12th century, but at present have all closed and reclaimed, with still many historic old towns in the area. Many types of geology n this area have yielded many types if minerals. Occasionally Tungsten minerals, but this is a rare combo, to have Scheelite of this color in association with the Mica. Most Scheelit from this area is either brown or slightly yellowish, but this is an uncommon color in Scheelite. Excellent piece, age is hard to tell. Francis Hueber, who was more known as a PaleoBotanist at the Smithsonian, but did amass a meseum like collection of minerals in 75 years of collecting, did like older European minerals. Therefore this specimen is likely from before WWII, when specimens in the region were still reasonably easy to gather. Just do some research to reach my conclusion that you are looking at a rare and precious specimen here.. This specimen is 226 grams, or 8 oz. The size is 3 inch x 2.6 inch x 2 inch.
