Description: This is a custom 12" figure from a tv series and movie commemorating a real American hero of the Old West, Seth Bullock (born July 23rd, 1849 and died September 23rd, 1919) (played by Timothy Oliphant). Bullock was a Canadian-American frontiersman, businessman, politician, sheriff, and US Marshal. Bullock's father was retired British Sergeant Major and hero, George Bullock. Seth's childhood was not happy as his father was a strict disciplinarian and beat Seth for even minor infractions. Bullock ran away the first time at age 13. At age 16 he went to Montana to live with his sister. Seth Bullock was completely on his own at age 18. Bullock moved to Helena Montana. In 1867 he unsuccessfully ran for the Territorial Legislature. Eventually he was elected to the Territorial Senate and served in 1871 and 1872. Seth helped create Yellowstone National Park. Bullock was later elected as sheriff of Lewis and Clark County Montana. During his time as sheriff Bullock would kill his first man, Clell Watson. Watson had stolen a horse and decided to shoot it out with Bullock rather that to surrender. Bullock was wounded in the gunfight but he brought Watson in for trail. Watson was due to be hanged but a mob scared off the hangman before he carried out the sentence. Bullock jumped on the scaffolding, holding the mob off with a shotgun, and pulled the lever sending Watson to his death. Bullock would open a hardware store with a man named Sol Star. Star and Bullock decided in 1876 that there was a need in the gold rush town of Deadwood (in the Dakota Territory) for hardware and relocated there. Deadwood was a rowdy, lawless, dangerous place. The day after they arrived, Wild Bill Hickok was murdered by Jack McCall. The town decided that they needed law and order. Bullock's background seemed a good reason for Bullock to become Deadwood's first sheriff. Bullock took his job seriously and went about civilizing the town. He appointed several deputies and had a fearless no nonsense approach to law enforcement. Bullock's reputation helped him tame the town without killing anyone. He did have a few run-ins with Al Swearengen the owner of the most successful brothel (the Gem Theatre) in Deadwood. Bullock would become acquainted with Theodore Roosevelt and the two remained lifelong friends. Sol and Seth would expand their business together, Bullock and his wife would evetually go into the hotel business with the Bullock Hotel. Seth Bullock would also spend time as a US Marshal. If you would like to watch a good fictional account of Seth Bullock's exploits be sure to check out the acclaimed Deadwood tv series 2004-2006 as well as "Deadwood-the Movie" 2019. Timothy Oliphant plays Seth Bullock and does a great job. While some of the stories in the show and the movie are not historical the series and movie does a good job projecting the character of Seth Bullock. Seth Bullock was one of the most colorful and interesting characters of the Old West. Figure designed mainly for display purposes for the wild west fan. Please note that while this figure does not look exactly like Seth Bullock/ Timothy Oliphant there is a bit of a resemblance. This would make a nice addition to any collection. sold as is.
