Description: Here for sale, a collection of seven classic science fiction paperbacks from the mid-late 20th century. The collection includes: Star Trek: Log One by Alan Dean Foster. Ballantine, 1975 11th printing.Early Star Trek novels. Alan Dean Foster was hired to adapt the scripts of the Star Trek: The Animated Series episodes into novel form, and produced the Log series. Each of the first several "Log" books adapts three separate Animated Series episodes, here: "Beyond the Farthest Star," "Yesteryear," and "One of Our Planets is Missing." The Animated Series itself is well-regarded by critics and Trekkers alike; the producers managed to recruit most of the original cast to voice their characters, and the animation, while simple by today's standards, was excellent for the time. Further, the episodes were written by experienced TV writers and matched the original series for creativity and entertainment value. First on the Moon by Hugh Walters. Tempo Books, 1962 1st printing. This is the American paperback edition of the third book in Walters' "Chris Godfrey of UNEXA" series, a young readers' sci fi series featuring a teen space explorer in a near-future (from the perspective of the late 1950s) Earth. Originally published in Great Britain in 1959 as Operation Columbus, the title was changed for the American release. The Chris Godfrey series would eventually include twenty novels, many of which are considered highly collectible. Star Guard by Andre Norton. Fawcett Crest, 1st printing. Not dated, but the $1.75 cover price probably puts it some time in the 1970s.Alice Norton published science fiction and fantasy work under the pen name "Andre Norton" from 1934 through 2005 -- an incredibly long and fruitful writing career. Star Guard, originally published in 1955, tells the story of a far-future universe where Terrans travel the universe as trained mercenaries for Central Control, a despotic global government. It's unrelenting military sci-fi action and well worth a read. 2020 Vision by Harlan Ellison and others. Avon, 1974 1st printing. A collection of science fiction short stories including: "Build Me a Mountain" by Ben Bova; "Cloak of Anarchy" by Larry Niven; "Silent in Gehenna" by Harlan Ellison; "The Pugilist" by Poul Anderson, "Eat, Drink, and Be Merry" by Dian Girad, "Prognosis: Terminal" by Dave McDaniel, "Future Perfect" by A.E. Van Vogt, and "A Thing of Beauty" by Norman Spinrad. As the title suggests, all the stories are takes on the state of the world in 2020 from the perspective of a mid-century sci fi writer. Time of the Great Freeze by Robert Silverberg. Dell, 1966 1st printing. A really entertaining and exciting post-apocalyptic story about Earth 300 years after the onset of a new ice age. Refugees who have lived in underground communities since the disaster finally emerge in an effort to connect with other survivors, and the novel tells their adventures as they traverse first the continent, then the frozen ocean, encountering the descendants of those who were not lucky enough to escape underground. This one is a real page-turner. View From a Height by Isaac Asimov. Discus, 1975 1st printing. This is a stand-out in the lot: a collection of Asimov's nonfiction essays about science that he would occasionally publish in the sci fi pulps during the 1950s and 1960s. Asimov was a scientist as well as a writer, and his takes on the state of science and human society are fascinating. I only got about half way through this one but it is a very entertaining read. Inherit the Stars: Book One of the Giants Trilogy by James P. Hogan. James P. Hogan was a non-writer who went to see 2001: A Space Odyssey and, disappointed in the ending, was challenged by his mates to write a sci fi novel of his own. The result was the Giants series, a five-book series telling the pre-history of the Solar System and humankind's adventures in discovering its ancient origins.
