Description: Dwight Eisenhower, Jerry Ford, Nelson Rockefeller, Tom Dewey, and Senators Jacob Javits, James Buckley, and Hugh Scott. A small archive of letters related to a long-time party loyalist being considered or seeking various positions. Bernie Katzen had a distinguished career as a lawyer, humanitarian, and advocate for closer US-Israeli ties. For several decades, starting in the 1944 Dewey campaign he helped build stronger ties between the Republican Party, the American Jewish Community and Israel. The lot includes 1) Dwight D. Eisenhower signed letter January 12, 1959 to Senator Homer Capehart assuring him that he would consider Katzen for appointment to the Court of Claims. The letter shows some toning and has a red ink rubber docket in the upper right but carries a deep dark presidential signature. 2) Gerald R. Ford signed letter “Jerry” January 31, 1969 saying that he has contacted Nixon’s new Attorney General William Rogers supporting appointment to the UN Human Rights Commission. There is a slight tear and couple of holes in the upper margin from removed staples. 3) Nelson Rockefeller signed letter as Governor, March 10, 1959 thanking him for accepting appointment to the New York State Commission Against Discrimination, slight smudge to a letter at the end of his signature. 4) Tom Dewey signed a letter on Dec. 1957 acknowledging a group of letters –most likely thanks or support from prominent Republican officials. “I congratulate you and hope those expressions of high esteem and gratitude will be remembered in the future when it counts.” Also, four letters from Jacob Javits “Jack” and two others from Senators Buckley and Scott regarding appointments and letters of support.
