ARTIST HISTORY:Wallace Nutting was a minister turned photographer, antiquarian, and entrepreneur in the state of Connecticut in the 20th century. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy and Harvard. He gave up the pulpit for health reasons in 1904 and turned to his hobby of photography to earn a living and settled in Southbury in 1906, and called his house “Nuttinghame”.He became a dedicated amateur photographer with consumer demand so great that Nutting hired a group of young women to hand color his photographs.His operation comprised five buildings in three New England states. He then went into the reproduction furniture business and wrote “those who know the pictures, want the chairs.”
