The cheeks and beard of our ameraucanas have been one of my favorite things about my flock. They are SOOOO FLUFFY! Our Ameraucana hens are known for their beautiful blue eggs and docile, friendly personalities. Shipping eggs can be a delicate process, and despite taking precautions, unforeseen challenges may arise. Here are some potential risks and issues to be aware of: 1. **Damage in Transit:** Shipping eggs involves transporting fragile items through various handling stages. Despite careful packaging, eggs may endure bumps, drops, or extreme temperatures during transit, potentially leading to cracks or damage to the embryos inside. 2. **Delayed Delivery:** Shipping delays are common and can impact the viability of the eggs. Extended transit times may cause the embryos to age beyond optimal conditions, reducing hatch rates. 3. **Temperature Fluctuations:** Eggs are sensitive to temperature fluctuations, especially during shipping. Exposure to extreme heat or cold can compromise the viability of the embryos, resulting in lower hatch rates or developmental abnormalities. 4. **Humidity Changes:** Fluctuations in humidity levels during shipping can affect the moisture content of the eggs, leading to dehydration or excessive moisture loss, which can hinder embryo development. 5. **Handling Errors:** Despite instructions for careful handling, mishaps can occur during the shipping process, such as rough handling or improper storage, which may impact the integrity of the eggs. **Improving Hatch Odds:** While shipping eggs poses inherent risks, there are steps you can take to enhance the likelihood of successful hatching: Once you receive hatching eggs, there are several steps you can take to increase hatch rates: 1. **Inspect the Eggs:** Upon arrival, carefully inspect the eggs for any visible cracks, leaks, or abnormalities. Discard any damaged eggs as they may not hatch successfully. 2. **Allow Eggs to Settle:** Let the eggs rest at room temperature for 12-24 hours before placing them in the incubator. This allows the embryos to settle and adapt to their new environment. 3. **Clean the Incubator:** Ensure that the incubator is clean and sanitized before placing the eggs inside. A clean environment reduces the risk of contamination and promotes healthy embryo development. 4. **Optimal Temperature and Humidity:** Set the incubator to the recommended temperature and humidity levels for the specific type of eggs you are hatching. Monitor these parameters closely throughout the incubation period to maintain optimal conditions. 5. **Proper Egg Positioning:** Place the eggs in the incubator with the pointed end slightly downwards. This helps the air cell remain in the correct position and facilitates proper embryo development. 6. **Regular Egg Rotation:** Rotate the eggs several times a day to prevent the embryos from sticking to the inner membrane and promote even heat distribution. Use an automatic egg turner if available, or manually rotate the eggs at least three times a day. 7. **Monitor Egg Development:** Candle the eggs periodically to monitor embryo development and detect any potential issues early on. Remove any eggs showing signs of infertility or development abnormalities to prevent contamination of the rest. 8. **Maintain Cleanliness:** Keep the incubator and surrounding area clean throughout the incubation period. Regularly remove any debris or eggshell fragments to prevent bacterial growth and ensure a healthy hatching environment. 9. **Patience and Observation:** Hatching eggs requires patience and careful observation. Avoid unnecessary disturbances to the incubator and monitor the hatching process closely. Be prepared to assist any chicks that may have difficulty hatching, but refrain from intervening unless absolutely necessary. **Disclaimer:** While these recommendations aim to improve the odds of successful hatching, please note that shipping eggs inherently carries risks, and hatch rates may vary. We advise hatchers to carefully consider these factors and proceed with caution. We cannot guarantee the viability or hatch success of shipped eggs due to external factors beyond our control. We have NO guarantees on shipped hatching eggs! We DO NOT offer refunds / returns under any circumstances. However if there are any total destruction loses upon delivery with picture proof I may send you more eggs at my discretion.
