This buttery smooth bokeh is achieved through the use of Smooth Trans Focus technology, which uses apodization optics in order to diffuse the edges of out-of-focus elements, and a circular aperture, rendering them even smoother than a standard lens can produce with a pleasing Circular defocused effect. So this is by no means a soft-focus lens - on the contrary, the reproduction of details in the focused plane is as crisp and sharp as that of few other lenses. The f/2.8 maximum aperture assists in capture images with shallow depth of field, though with the apodization elements this functions as a T4.5. The lens also features a manual focus design with a manual focus distance of 2.9'. Additionally, it features both a ten-blade manual aperture diaphragm and a nine-blade auto aperture diaphragm, both rounded to create smooth bokeh. When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background is enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocused points of light. This STF lens overcomes this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. The lens is always focused manually, so it is used without autofocus. The relevant aperture values can be set directly via a rotating ring on the lens. The aperture can just as well be selected from the camera as usual, the ring is then set to A. The geometric luminous intensity (F value) of the lens is 2.8. This value is relevant for the depth of field and the reproduction of the blurred areas. The apodization element used swallows almost one and a half stops of light. The amount of light effective for exposure, indicated by the T value (aperture value appropriate for transmission), effectively corresponds to an aperture of 4.5. In other words: the depth of field can be chosen as small as f/2.8, while the exposure corresponds to that of f/4.5; a manual aperture ring can adjust T setting from 4.5 to 6.7. The camera automatically takes this effect into account when metering the exposure.As an additional extra, the lens offers an extended close-up setting up to a scale of 1:4.
