Description: SPLASH COPPER - 3.5 cm - BISBEE, ARIZONA 28785 SPLASH COPPER - 3.5 cm - BISBEE, ARIZONA This is a very good example of splash copper. Splash copper occurs in the smelters when molten copper is poured into the molds for ingots or anodes. The drops splash onto the (steel) structure of the machine and cool immediately. When they accumulate too much the workers have to scrape them off and smelt them again. A few of these go into lunchboxes and come out as keepsakes of their time at the smelter, or sold as copper souvenirs. The Bisbee smelter closed in 1904, so this is a true old timer. It’s a great piece from historic Bisbee, ‘Queen of the Copper Camps’. Bisbee mines have been closed for almost 50 years.
