It can be found on streambanks and wet pine barrens. General Description: Sweetspire is a sweetly scented flowering, deciduous shrub with beautiful autumn foliage and wildlife value. Leaf Structure: Alternate, simple, elliptical leaves with finely serrated edges. They measure 1 ½ to 4 inches long. Rich green spring into summer; turning various shades of red, orange, and yellow. Beautiful autumn color persists into early winter. Stem Structure: Green to reddish purple with crescent shaped leaf scars. Bark Structure: Branches mature into a smooth, reddish brown.
