Description: Tales to Astonish #13 (1960) featuring 1st Groot Written by Stan Lee and illustrated by Jack Kirby, this Silver Age (1956-69) comic book is a key issue with the very 1st Groot appearance (From Guardians of the Galaxy). Also in this issue are more Monster Stories by Stan Lee and art by Steve Ditko or Jack Kirby. "I Challenged...Groot!" by Stan & Jack "I found the Ambonimal Snowman!" by Stan & Jack "My Friend is ... Not Quite Human!" by Stan & Steve"I found The Hidden World!" by Stan & Steve 10¢ cover Silver-Age books are very hard to find in Mint grade mostly because of newsstand distribution. The nature of the business really reduced the possible number of Mint / Near Mint books because of delivery (tied with twine in bundles) and display (in metal spinner racks) that caused problems with the cover and spine even before any kids got their grubby hands on them, bent them, perused them, shared them, rolled them, and bent back the cover to read them. Considering the odds, it's amazing that any books in NM condition ever made it through the process. This is the main reason for the extreme pricing for anything in an Overstreet grade of 7.0 or higher and the desire for more affordable reading copies of Key Issues, like this book. These existed long before there was a significant 20% price hike. Hey, back then, 2¢ was significant. 12¢ cover prices dominated the Silver Age during the 1960s and it was right around the time of the next major price hike in 1970 that ended the Silver Age and 15¢ books heralded the beginning of the Bronze Age of Comics. Sold as is. I personally did a page count and will attest that the book and all pages are complete. This is a solid, nice VG book. Spine is nice, pages are supple and cream colored. Not brittle, not brown. * there is a #13 on the cover, please look at the pictures before you purchase, as there are no returns. I personally review and page-count every book I sell, checking for insidious rips/tears coupon clippings, or ....Missing Marvel Stamps or clipped Palisades Park amusement admissions ... or additional drawings by previous owners, centerfolds or pin-up pages missing, hidden money, etc, etc. I try to list any and all major defects as possible, but I'm only human and can miss or forget some minor details. I have 40+ years of experience grading comics, but grading is subjective and I only offer my opinion for your convenience. Along with my grading evaluation, I also give the objective Overstreet definitions for your convenience as well. This is not to imply or infer or guarantee that a CGC or CBCS grading / slabbing of this book will match my grading opinion, although I'm hoping that it will be close. There are no returns accepted, so please ask questions beforehand. I'll gladly and quickly respond to any inquiries or additional picture requests. I want you to be happy with your purchase. :) ======== OVERSTREET GRADING DEFINITIONS ======== 4.0 VERY GOOD (VG): The average used comic book. Cover shows moderate to significant wear, and may be loose but not completely detached. Cover reflectivity is low. Can have moderate creases or dimples. Corners may be blunted. Store stamps, name stamps, arrival dates, initials, etc. have no effect on this grade. Some discoloration, fading, foxing, and even minor soiling is allowed. As much as a 1/4" triangle can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" square is also acceptable. Only minor unobtrusive tape and other amateur repair allowed on otherwise high grade copies. Moderate spine roll may be present and/or a 1" spine split. Staples may be discolored. Minor to moderate staple tears and stress lines may be present, as well as some rust migration. Paper is brown but not brittle. Minor to moderate interior tears may be present. Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple.
