Description: The Good: This Porta 03 MkII is in very good condition. It has been serviced, deep cleaned, thoroughly tested, and sounds terrific. The Bad: The Pause button does not work (parts missing from transport). Auto shut off at the end of the tape does not work. Stop button must be pressed to stop the tape. The Details: I’ve been recording with and maintaining Tascam 4 track cassette decks since 1986, and this Porta 02 has been completely gone through and is ready to use. Record/Playback head is in great shape, no evidence of damage or wear. Capstan and pinch roller are also very good. All faders, potentiometers, and switches have been cleaned (CRC QD Contact Cleaner) and lubricated (DeOxit F100 Fader Lube) – no pops or crackles. Record and playback works perfectly on all channels. Both Mic/Line inputs are clean and work great. Line out and headphone outputs function as they should with no excessive hiss. The LED meters work for recording and playback. When I first got the deck, record and playback did not work. I replaced the transistor near the power input, which restored these functions. This transistor seems to be a weak spot on the Porta 03s. Printed circuit boards checked for any damaged solder joints, loose wires, etc. All 3 belts have been replaced. I cleaned the heads, capstan, and pinch roller after each use, and the heads have been demagnetized. The case is in very good shape with only a few small scratches on the top and sides. There are deep scratches on the bottom. I used a small mirror to take pictures of the heads, capstan, pinch roller, etc. so there are some odd reflections in those photos. A non-original power adapter with correct voltage, polarity, amperage, and plug is included, along with an unused Quantegy 472 C-10 cassette. Even though this 03 is ready to use and enjoy, because some functions are not working, I have listed the unit as For Parts/Not Working. If you can live without the Pause button and Auto Shut Off, this is a good deck offered at below the going price for a clean 03 MkII in good working condition.
