Description: This album represents the first three years in the life of Ten Years After — from their beginning in small British clubs to the peak of their acclaim at the legendary Woodstock Festival - and with it a distinguished fragment of rock history. Ten Years After came out of the British blues circuit of the late Sixties, a fertile breeding ground for emergent young groups. That blues boom at its height was instrumental in heralding the arrival of the guitar hero and the groups they led: Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Pete Townshend and, of course, Alvin Lee. Alvin had formed Ten Years After with Leo Lyons (bass), Chick Churchill (keyboards) and Ric Lee (drums) in the autumn of 1967, although they existed prior to that as the Jaybirds, a group formed in their collective home base of Nottingham. On the strength of their grass roots following which spread quickly from Nottingham, Ten Years After were able to go into the studio to record their first album without the then customary formality of having had a hit single first. Live pertormances have always been the cornerstone of the group's success and their second album "Undead" was recorded live in order to capture some of the excitement present at every concert. "Woodchoppers Ball" is from that album and also illustrates the group's early interest in jazz-blues fusions. "Stonedhenge," a year later, was a more conscious studio album but still evident was the raw power and energy that had by now made Ten Years After into an international supergroup. Listen to "Hear Me Calling," later to be covered by Slade, the lengthy "No Title" • in which each member of the group steps forward to solo - and "'Going To Try." From the "Ssssh" album comes "I Woke Up This Morning," a basic blues formula but one which leaves Alvin enough freedom to play some commanding guitar pyrotechnics. In 1970 came "Crickle-wood Green" and with it the group's first hit single "Love Like A Man," a worldwide smash. Completing this retrospective look at Ten Years After comes "I'm Going Home," unquestionably Ten Years After's anthem, which was immortalised in the Woodstock movie. This versio, of that song was recorded live at Woodstock; it is just over 9 minutes of the kind of music that has made Ten Years After into one of the world's leading rock 'n' roll attractions. It serves as a fitting finale to this album.
