Mary McCall, Jr. (1904 - 1986) was a distinguished American screenwriter. After attending both Vassar College and Trinity College, Dublin, she drifted into screenwriting in the early 1930s. Among her writing credits include writing The Fighting Sullivans (1944), Max Reinhardt’s version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1935), Sinclair Lewis’s Babbitt (1934), two strong early Barbara Stanwyck pictures - The Secret Bride (1934) and The Woman in Red (1935), Dr. Socrates (1935) starring Paul Muni and eight of the screenplays for the Maisie film series starring Ann Sothern. She was one of the original founders of the Screen Writers’ Guild in the 1930s. McCall fought the conservative Motion Picture Alliance during the Hollywood Blacklist years. In 1954, she had to defend herself before the House Un-American Activities Committee against claims that she was a communist sympathizer. Eventually, she was completely exonerated. She was the first woman President of the Writer’s Guild of America from 1942 - 1944 and from 1951 - 1952. McCall was the first recipient of the Writer’s Guild of America Valentine Davies Award in 1962 and she received the Guild’s Edmund J. North Award in 1985.
