Description: The Gentleman’s Companion Complete In Two Volumes By: Charles H. Baker Jr Crown Publishers 1946 Both volumes one and two, share their original presentation slipcase which as a single unit, measures approximately 6-1/2” by 10” by 2” and weighs around 2-1/2 pounds. Volume one contains 220 numbered pages, including; “A Company of Hand-Picked Receipts, each one Beloved & Notable in its Place, collected faithfully on Three Voyages & a Quarter Million Miles around the World, & Other Journeys.” Volume two contains 216 numbered pages, including; “A personally collected Regiment of World-Famous Lively Liquid Masterpieces from Greater & Lesser Ports of Orient & Occident, & the South Seas.” The set as a whole appears to have been very well cared for with the exception of the large pasted paper labels affixed to the sides of the case which appear to have experienced some rather significant wearing. Having said that, the slipcase retains its structural integrity and shows very little wearing anywhere else. Both of the books are in excellent vintage condition and appear to have most likely never been read, with the only exception being a clean tear across the page which displays the table of contents of volume two (see images 14 and 15). Whilst I am hesitant to mention anything that may have the appearance of downplaying damage, I do feel as though I’d be somewhat remiss to not mention the fact that this is a very clean tear which just so happens to be positioned on a page which has nothing printed on the backside. Meaning, it seems as though, someone with a little creativity, patience and dexterity might be able to virtually eliminate the tear in such a way that it might not be much of an issue. Both of these vintage cloth bound hardcovers have clearly benefited from having been stored in their original slipcase, with their covers remaining in great shape with their intended solid red, uniform coloration and gold lettering. The bindings are obviously in tact and strong, with the pages in pristine condition, free of any foxing or issues with no additional rips, tears, writing, dog ears or damage. Overall, this is a beautiful set which may very well have never been read or referenced in its nearly eighty years of existence. I was actually wondering to myself if perhaps, once, long ago, a gentleman of great import had received the book as a gift back in the mid to late 1940’s and just upon initially opening it, he accidentally tore the aforementioned table of contents page. Maybe he was interrupted by someone. Oh! Wait! Suppose the book was a gift from his girlfriend, who was actually the one who startled him in such a way as to have been the reason he tore the page…. Consequently, he may have then decided that he would place the book on his bookshelf and save the experience for another day, like a day in which he felt that he could handle the book in a more delicate manner. It seems feasible to think that the woman may very well have later became his wife, as well as his lifelong companion, she would even occasionally reference the night he tore the book, as it eventually ended up as an inside joke between them. However, ultimately, he never drew the books from the shelf again. Hmmm. While I can’t say for sure that that is the exact history of the set, for various reasons I can’t really explain, I do believe that might be just what happened…. ———————————————— The below details the Official Seller Policies and Outlines the most Important Information Pertaining to eBay Transactions with Goldielox1017 and / or WildHyenavintage: eBay Seller Name: Goldielox1017 eBay Store Name: WildHyenaVintage Our prices are almost always subject to a system of "Reverse Auction Liquidation" based on item rarity and product demand.
