Five volumes in total. The three volumes of the Old Testament plus the Apocrypha volume are all one of only 75 copies printed on Arnold unbleached rag paper for C. Billington out of a total edition of 1000 copies of the Bible and 1250 copies of the Apocrypha. The Apocrypha is numbered XXXI and the three Old Testament volumes are either acknowledged in print or signed by C. Billington in the colophons. These four volumes are bound in full niger morocco with gilt borders, five raised bands on spine and all edges gilt. The New Testament is one of 1000 copies printed on japon bound in the original gilt stamped parchment board. Typography arranged by Francis Meynell. Illustrated throughout with 15 copper engravings by Stephen Gooden, each volume with an engraved title page, head piece and tail piece. Printed at the Oxford University Press. CONDITION: Natural variation in leather shades between the four morocco volumes, almost always seen in Nonesuch Press books with this binding. Apocrypha: Ex-libris on front pastedown, otherwise fine. Genesis to Ruth: Light, even spotting to front and rear covers, small area of rubbing to bottom raised band on spine. Light, even spotting to front and rear covers and small area of rubbing to lowest raised spine band. Other two Old Testament volumes (Vols. 3 and 4) entirely fine. Vol 5 (New Testament): Ex-libris to front pastedown. Light rubbing to parchment paper spine edge of front cover, spine slightly darkened and small area of darkening at bottom of rear cover (see photos). Japon paper shows light, even toning at edges of pages throughout. DISCUSSION: Similar to their 7-volume The Works of Shakespeare set and the Iliad andOdyssey set, this is one of the highlights of the Nonesuch Press bibliography.
