Three-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize, twice for drama and once for fiction, Wilder has hewn out a unique place for himself in American letters. He is a complete original: no writer has imitated him; nor has he repeated himself in any of his major works. He first reached fame with his romantic and ironic novel, The Bridge of San Luis Rey, which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for 1927. His later novels-The Woman of Andros, written after a year spent in Greece, and Heaven's My Destination, which is his only novel about the contemporary American scene, added to his reputation. In the past two decades Wilder has moved into the forefront of American dramatists. His touching portrait of small-town life, Our Town, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1938, and his challenging and controversial The Skin of Our Teeth, called "a kind of cosmic variety show," won the prize for1942. His one-act farce, The Merchant of Yonkers, was revised by Wilder in the early 1950's and had a huge success on Broadway in 1956 under its new title, The Matchmaker.Wilder considers himself a teacher rather than a writer, and in fact he has spent more time teaching than writing. He has lectured and taught widely abroad, and in this country has been a teacher at Lawrenceville School and a professor at Harvard. His archeological studies in Rome helped provide him with the necessary background to write The Ides of March. He is a hard-working, meticulous craftsman and because of this has published relatively little in his long career. However, every one of his writings in the past three decades has been a work of stature.ABOUT THE BOOKThornton Wilder calls his novel "a fantasia on certain events and persons of the last days of the Roman republic." It is essentially an imaginative account of the last months in the life of Julius Caesar, both as they directly affect him and as they affect Romans connected with him. The narrative consists of a series of imaginary documents: private letters, entries in journals, and reports of Caesar's secret police."No one but a boldly imaginative writer would have ventured to do this, and no one without Mr. Wilder's extraordinary literary power and his adequate scholarship would have succeeded so brilliantly. 'The Ides of March' is a fascinating book.... A great deal of its charm is entirely the author's, who manages to depict with high effectiveness a number of vivid, glowing and powerful personalities."-THE NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE"Not only the stature of Caesar but also his tragedy is suggested, and the tragedy is the more impressive because it is never stated. It arises from the total impression of this short, witty and extremely serious book."—THE TIMES (LONDON) LITERARY SUPPLEMENT Don't forget to check out other great deals in our eBay Store!!
