The Indian Reader ~ Vintage 1987 Native American tabloid ~ Third (Final) Issue

Description: I am one of the original publishers, editors and sole design and layout artist for this unique, niche 1987 Native American publication. Only three issues were published and freely distributed between Spring 1986 and Fall 1987. This is the Third (and final) Issue and was mailed Fall 1987 to about 12,000 institutions, tribes, libraries, cultural centers, politicians and influential individuals of the day. More were slated to be printed and mailed but that never happened and the tabloid died out. This is the final issue. This project was the result of a unique convergence of financial resources, talent, and information streams. Produced by the NAIM Corporation (Native American Indian Media), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) which I personally incorporated and served as its Executive Director, utilized funding from the Tennessee Indian Council and weekly information feeds from the IPN -- the Indigenous Press Network (the Native American equivalent of Associated Press or United Press International) to create a timely and informative publication addressing current Native issues, politics, spirituality, and art. The Third Issue is printed on standard newsprint, with a bright white cover and center page, is tabloid sized measuring 11.5" wide x 13.75" tall and is 24 pages with a 4 page center pullout, for 28 pages total. 47,000 copies were slated to be printed, but we actually printed only about 28,000 copies before funding ran out. Approximately 12,000 copies were bulk mailed at that time, and about 12,000 copies were labelled and ready to mail, but never were, due to funding cutoff, and were eventually destroyed, literally thrown away. I remember the sick feeling I had after months of trying to pry funding from the Tennessee Indian Council (which was having problems of its own making) to see these thrown in the trash. A very sad day. I left this group soon after this, and departed in 1989 and never looked back. All of the organizations -- and some of the individuals -- instrumental in producing this tabloid are long gone now. This is indeed a tiny portrait of American Indian issues of that time. I have 10 copies of the Third (final) Issue available. As far as I am aware, these are the only copies that remain in existence. I also have copies available of Issues #1 and #2, so please be sure to look at my other auctions for those copies. CONDITION ISSUES -- You are buying an original uncirculated copy of a 36 year old tabloid publication on newsprint. As such, it has slightly yellowed due to age, and some copies may show other minor issues including wrinkles or folds, some stains or ink bleed, or some very minor folded ears. These copies were put in storage soon after printing and were never distributed and have been handled only a few times over the years. Overall the copies are in fair condition. I am not American Indian nor do I descend from Native Americans. At that time, when I was so young and energetic, I was involved for a few years in Native issues and causes, before I came to an understanding that this was inappropriate for me to occupy this space and so I departed that world decades ago. However, the experiences definitely affected my worldview, and is demonstrated in this work, a labor of love and dedication of which I was part.
