Place and pay for your order then contact seller with your choices. THE PROJECT - The towns and cities of the West Kootenay Region of British Columbia were born of the 1890's hard-rock mining boom. In recognition of the region's heritage, Kootenay Savings Credit Union in 1981 commissioned artist Mal Gagnon to share his graphic impressions of eight towns that flourished during the mining boom. It was therefore fitting that the project begin on the ocassion of the 75th anniversary of Cominco Ltd.a premiere mining and smelting company in Canada. Included in the series are scenes of Rossland, Trail, Nelson, Sandon, Nakusp, Sproats Landing (Castlegar), Grand Forks and Salmo. Drawn from historical photos provided by community and provincial archives this ambitious project is the culmination of nearly two thousand hours, spanning over four years. Most artists use the pencil only as a preliminary means to an end but in this project Mal has explored it as a serious medium in itself. IMAGE DESCRIPTION -" Sandon - 1897" ... Sandon was at the centre of the Slocan Silver boom in the 1890's. Rich silver-lead showings were discovered in the valley of Carpenter Creek in September, 1891 by Eli Carpenter and John Sandon. When news of the discovery reached mining circles in the northwest in 1892 the area was flooded with eager prospectors seeking their fortune. THE PRINT - Reproduced in the offset printing process as a half-tone print in a buffalo brown ink on a high quality heavy Buckeye antique white rag paper printing stock. The image size of this print is 11.5"x 16" with a 2" border on the top and sides and 2.5" border on the bottom. The final trim size of each is 16"x 20". THE ARTIST - Mal Gagnon was born in Vanguard, Saskatchewan and received his formal art training at The Alberta College of Art in Calgary, Alberta. His major was in Advertising Art and later switching to Fine Art. In 1988 he moved to the beautiful Okanagan Valley of British Columbia. His popular detailed painting style has led to multiple private and corporate commissions among which include mining companies, financial institutions, insurance companies, golf clubs, wineries and real estate. His passion for the Okanagan Valley is evident in his many watercolor and acrylic paintings that depict the beautiful landscape of British Columbia.
