In the background you can see the Grain and Produce building with the next ferry riders waiting for the ferry to return across the river.The Monticello based coach ran from the late nineteenth century until 1915 when it was replaced by a couple of automobiles. The stagecoach would load at the train depot in Burnside and then ferry across the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River (near current day Burnside Marina). The 21 mile trip had several stops for mail, toll gates and a horse change at the halfway point. The journey could take up to 5 hours depending on the weather. Over the span of the service, three coaches were used.History of the Monticello-Burnside Stagecoach:From 1896 until 1915 a stagecoach ran from Monticello to Burnside, Kentucky. The improvement of roads in Wayne County provided an excellent opportunity for an enterprising businessman to begin a means of transportation that would allow the general public to travel in comfort! A route between Monticello and Burnside made it possible for the citizens of Wayne County to connect with the railroad station in Burnside and would insure improved delivery of the United States mail. The print is triple matted and framed, making it a stunning addition to any room. It is a one-of-a-kind piece and was produced using lithography techniques in the United States during the 1980s.
