Description: GOOD to VERY GOOD CONDITION This sale is for a VICTORIAN hardback edition entitled “The Practical Horse Keeper,” by George Fleming, LL.D., F.R.C.V.S., Principal Veterinary Surgeon of the Army, with illustrations and tables. It was published by L. Upcott Gill, of London, and is undated, circa 1886. George Fleming (1833–1901) was a Scottish veterinary surgeon and anti-vivisectionist. He was a prolific writer, and supported the passing of the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1881, which regulated the profession, in his time as President of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. He served in the Crimean War and in 1883, he was appointed principal veterinary surgeon to the army (he retired from the army in 1890). The book is in good, neat condition for its age, with minor wear to the original decorative cloth hardback cover, with a previous owner’s initials at the front and no other ink or pencil markings in the book (a related horse veterinary article has been pasted to the blank page at the back, and a similar smaller article/remedy for the lava of the botfly at the bottom of page 246). The binding is good with no loose or missing pages. There is no dust-jacket. A wonderful, illustrated VICTORIAN edition.
