Description: This is the C. K. Scott Monctieff translation of a 12th Century epic found in a manuscript in the Bodleian Library. Its 155 pages of text are accompanied by nine illustrations by Anna and Elena Balbusso. Composed to honor the death of the Christian knight Roland while fighting in Charlemagne’s campaign against the Saracens in Spain, it quickly emerged as a popular narrative poem. The book was printed on Abbey Wove paper and bound in cloth blocked with a design by the artists. Both the book and its slipcase are in very good, unread condition.
