Description: This is a complete set of "The Works of Samuel Johnson, with Murthy’s Essays,” in six volumes, edited by The Rev. Robert Lynam. This set was printed in 1825 by J.F. Dove, St. John's Square in London, for George Cowie & Co. in the Poultry. The books are bound in leather and feature a frontispiece engraving by Robert Grave. Attractive, strong binding in full calf, with gilt frame border on sides, four bands on spines with gilt tooling above and below. Black labels lettered in gilt, with one label missing (but residual lettering visible in blind). Volume one front cover is detached but together with the set. Small tear at top right of spine on volume two. Some issue apparent to top of pages 347-360 in Volume one. All other pages are largely bright and clean with little fixing throughout. See photograph of receipt from purchase by the previous owner, 1997 at $441. Volume One contains an inscription, “Cornwallis Maude, from his friends Stafford H. Northcote and John A. Thomson.” These men are important historical figures, having held multiple positions in British government. Cornwallis Maude was a viscount who served in the administration of Benjamin Disraeli. Sir Stafford Henry Northcote was 1st Earl of Iddesleigh, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Secretary of State for India. This set comes with an adventure for any history buff, to identify which John A. Thompson may be referenced in the inscription. Anglophiles, this one’s for you.
