Description: NOTES ON THE STATE OF VIRGINIA (DISBOUND) Author: Jefferson, Thomas Title: NOTES ON THE STATE OF VIRGINIA (DISBOUND) Publication: Philadelphia, PA: R.T. Rawle, 1801 Description: Leather-bound. LACKS titlepage, frontis portrait of Jefferson, folding map of Virginia, folding chart of Indian tribes. Contemporary speckled calf 8 1/4 in. x 5 1/2 in., with sufficient portions of contrasting maroon spine label to discern it's gilt lettering - "Jefferson's Notes.". Gilt ticking to all leather edges, albeit quite faded. Leather missing to top and bottom of spine. Browning to pages. NOTE: This book is DISBOUND. It is in THREE DISTINCT PIECES.Some dog-eared pages. About three pages show several lines of handwritten commentary to margins. Several pages repeat or misprint their page numbers, but all is contiguous.A reader was really engaging with the facts and ideas of Jefferson's report - purportedly Jefferson's thoughtful and detailed response to a survey handed him by a French National, which associates laterpressed him to publish.Contains the 56-age Appendix "Relative to The Murder of Logan's Family"., and Jefferson's 8-page Inaugural speech (March 4, 1801) wherein he stated: "WE ARE ALL REPUBLICANS; WE ARE ALL FEDERALISTS". (Jefferson goes on to say: "If there be any among us, who would wish to dissolve this union, or to change its republican form, let them stand undisturbed, as monuments of the safety with which error of opinion may be tolerated, where reason is left free to combat it.". Ahem!)Maps/charts: 1) "An Eye Draught of Madison's Cave" opposite p. 41;" 2) A View of The Natural Bridge in Virginia - folding plate opposite p. 44, with 2 1/2 in. closed tear; 3) in-text map of Pittsburgh where the Allegheny and Monongohela Rivers conjoin to form The Ohio River, opposite p. 44 in the "Logan" Appendix. Poor (Disbound). This is a terrible copy of a very important book. With some loving attention, the very few missingpages (portrait, map, and folding chart) could be restored in a lovely binding.
