After working as an editor for the magazines Popeye and Brutus, he published the 102-volume Art Random, a contemporary art encyclopedia (Kyoto Shoin). In 1993, he published TOKYO STYLE (Kyoto Shoin, later reissued by Chikuma Bunko). His 1996 work ROADSIDE JAPAN: A Tour of Unusual Japan (Aspect, later reissued by Chikuma Bunko) won the 23rd Kimura Ihei Award.
