Description: "Trails Among the Columbine: A Colorado High Country Anthology" is a Numbered edition, #143. The Editor's Preface states, This volume marks the beginning of a new series of Sundance Books. Western history and railroad history have been our particular areas of interest, with Colorado narrow-gauge our emphasis. Through the years we have discovered something which really came as no surprise: many readers with a serious interest in western history and the history of Colorado's mountain railroads find the setting in which the rails were laid as fascinating to experience and read about as the railroads and iron horses which drew them there in the first place... In the current volume we have brought together a collection of writing, photography and illustration with fairly broad thematic content." The book is a mix of narrow-gauge railroads, scenic areas, and colorful Colorado towns. It is a great review of what makes Colorado so popular with the railroad community. The Columbine is a flower that grows at high altitudes and is pictured on the back of the book. It is will illustrated with one or more photographs with informative captions or maps on most pages. The pictures show the actual front and back of the book (under the plastic cover), the title page with the number, the Table of Contents and fifteen other pages about every 20 pages. We are honored to be the appointed caretakers of 3 steam locomotives owned by the city of Portland, Oregon. The collection includes the world famous SP 4449 Daylight locomotive, originally restored to pull the American Freedom Train in 1975-76. The magnificent SP&S 700 is also an operational 4-8-4 which came back to life in 1990. They are joined by their little sister, the OR&N 197, a Pacific 4-6-2 which will steam up again in about 1 year. All three are located at the new Oregon Rail Heritage Center, a working engine house with a turntable, allowing public access to the locomotives. We receive no support from the city, but rely solely upon volunteers and donations.
