Nance Sergeant Mathew Woodruff was from a farm near the town of St. Francisville, Clark County, Missouri. He joined the Union army at the beginning of the Civil War and fought with the 21st Missouri Volunteer Infantry Regiment; (later renamed the 21st Missouri Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment.) He took part in the Battle of Shiloh and many other battles. After the fighting he remained in the army. The diary records Sergeant Woodruff's travels by steamboat and railroad during this time, and his occupation duties in Mobile. Green cloth hardcover, gilt title letters to spine, b/w photos of the actual handwritten diary of Sergeant Mathew Woodruff, Footnotes, Bibliography, Index, viii+103pp, 5 ½ in wide x 8 ¼ in tall. Condition of Book is Near Fine. No dust jacket. Pages are clean and bright. Gilt title letters are bright. Sharp corners and faint shelfware. Nice copy.
