Description: Unusual Antique Chinese Scholars Brush Pot or Bitong with Copper Bands & Base, c1900. This is a genuine antique bamboo brush pot or bitong dating to the late 19th century or early 20th century. It has hand carved decoration to the front aspect featuring three scholarly figures in a boat garden with temples or summer houses, two of the elderly gents are playing a board game. The carving is in relief. The brush pot has at some point in its history acquired copper bands around the top and bottom, the base has the addition of a hammered copper plate. The copper has taken a deep rich patina, so has been in place for some considerable time.The pot has a lovely mellow age patina to the bamboo. There is a crack running down the back and several smaller ones that all appear to be associated to the pins holding the copper in place, none of the cracks go all the way through the wall so the pot maintains its integrity. The copper band around the top has a split, see the last photo. Offered in good used antique condition, with damage as described.
