Description: Offered for auction here is the booklet entitled the "Tunisia". Tunisia, a nation in North Africa on the Mediterranean Sea, had been occupied by German and Italian forces. Securing Tunisia was part of the Allied plan to remove the Axis military from Africa, so that the area could be a staging base for future attacks on the European mainland. The battle started in November 1942 and lasted for six months. Allied troops consisted of armies from the US, Britain, France, Poland and Greece. A sea landing was not possible, as the Germans had aircraft based on Sicily that could devastate a landing force, so the invasion was by land from Morocco and Algeria. After weeks of military mistakes, the Allies finally secured a foothold and pushed towards the capital city of Tunis. These booklets provided details on the planning and fighting in the various theaters of war. Each booklet addressed such topics as the (a) the strategic setting of the area, (b) military operations, and (c) an analysis of that campaign. The publications are well-illustrated with multiple color maps of the battlefields, routes of advance by the troops, and defensive lines. There are also black-and-white photographs. Each booklet measures appx 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches closed, 11 x 8 1/2 inches opened, and is printed on a high-quality semi-glossy paperstock. All are unused and in mint condition. The inland desert and mountain terrain proved to be almost as big an obstacle as the German/Italian defenders. The Axis forces ultimately collapsed, and over a quarter-million prisoners were taken. This publication has some great maps, showing the Northwest Africa theater; the advances of the Eastern Task Force of the Allies with German defensive positions; the southern operations area around the Gulf of Gabes; and the bridgehead leading to Tunis. This publication, which contains 30 pages, is in excellent, virtual mint, condition. There are no rips or tears, no writing or markings, no spills or smears, and the binding is secure with all pages firmly in place.
