Description: This rare 7/8-inch campaign button pictures Eugene Debs, with “Socialist Party” and “Workers of the World Unite” printed around border. A union bug with "38" is stamped at the bottom edge of the front face. The back shows some rust; the face is clean and in original condition. Eugene Debs was the Socialist Party of America candidate for president in1904, 1908, 1912, and in1920, when he was in prison for defying a court injunction. Though he received increasing numbers of popular votes each time he ran, he never attained any votes in the Electoral College. Note that the later “convict” buttons, used when Debs ran for President while serving prison time in 1920, are widely reproduced by the Debs Foundation as commemorative items. This button is an exceptionally rare original from an earlier campaign and came from a family collection assembled over several generations. Debs memorabilia, especially from his earlier campaigns, is highly collectible. The only identical button referenced online is in the Eugene V. Debs Museum Collection, Eugene V. Debs Foundation, in Terre Haute, IN.
