Right now there are over 500 listings on Ebay for Vignaud. ONLY ONE for Vignaud ramekins!! A wise woman once said, "A complete service for 12 should always have 13-14 of each piece. You never know!" and "You can never be too rich, too thin, or have too much Vignaud....." Many people new to collecting antique china do not realize that the word Limoges does not refer to a specific manufacturer. Limoges actually refers to the area in France where the fine porcelain pieces were produced. The company that made these pieces is Vignaud Freres, established in 1911 by Vignaud brothers, Albert and Gustave until 1938. In 1938, one of the Vignaud brothers, Gustave died and Albert, continued alone. In 1970 the factory was sold to Bernardaud. The backmark is the green white ware mark of the classic maker Vignaud Frères, which produced high quality porcelain in Limoges between 1911 and 1938. The elegant gold chain band highlights the wonderful quality of the pure white porcelain and makes these ramekins incredibly versatile. Since Vignaud produced a good number of similarly gold trimmed patterns, they would complement many other patterns by Vignaud or other quality makers. THE MARK OF QUALITY!! MARKEDSOLD BY"WRIGHT TYNDALE & VAN RODEN'S"PHILADEPHIA, PA. Vignaud marketed their china by agreeing to print the name of prominent sellers on the back of each of the pieces. This service was provided to retailers who sold considerable quantities of his wares. It gave customers a sense of prestige in owning such specially marked china. The bowl is marked on the underside WRIGHT TYNDALE & VAN RODEN'S, PHILADELPHIA, PA., a luxury porcelain retailer active in Philadelphia in the late 1800's to early 1900's and importers of fine porcelain made by Bernardaud, Haviland and Vignaud Limoges and similar. This fine china was part of an inventory removed from the estate of an avid antique china collector after she died and the owners sold the home. This rare and very lovely china is about 100 years old. Most of this collection revolves around Vignaud's early 1920's - 1930's china. All made out of the same shape molds, just decorated with different designs. This auction is for a very hard to find piece of Vignaud china. The bottom is marked "Vignaud, Limoges, France" This mark was used by Vignaud from about 1912 - 1938. This is part of the Hostess serving pieces, usually referred to as a DELUXE RAMEKIN. DELUXE RAMEKIN SET Since most Americans have never seen a ramekin, it isn't surprising they are a little hard to find. A ramekin is a small glazed ceramic or glass bowl used for cooking and serving various dishes. The term is derived from the French ramequin, a cheese- or meat-based dish baked in a small mold. With a normal capacity of approximately 50ml-250ml (2 to 8 fl oz), ramekins are commonly used for preparing and serving individual portions of a variety of dishes, including crème brûlée, French onion soup, molten chocolate cake, moin moin, cheese or egg dishes, poi, macaroni and cheese, lasagna, potted shrimps, ice cream, soufflé, baked cocottes, crumbles, or scallops, or used to serve side garnishes and condiments alongside an entrée. Traditionally circular with a fluted exterior, ramekins can also be found in novelty shapes like flowers, hearts, and stars. STILL LIKE NEW INSIDE!! This hard to find piece would not be found in what would be considered a "Standard" set of china. A piece like this would only be found in "Deluxe" sets or "Special Ordered", sold separate. When evaluating dinnerware china, always remember, for every 12 plates, cups and bowls etc., only ONE serving piece per kind, was made for each set. That is what makes these particularly hard to find and expensive. It was among an estate's china set consisting of Haviland, Minton and Vignaud china. They were produced about the same time, 1920's. They have the same basic shape. The borders, heavy gold trim are very similar, particularly on the serving pieces.
