Vintage Allan Troy Chess Book-Ed#9 Alekhine's Anguish 2/3

Description: There is a worldwide problem that is creating all sorts of difficulties. We have extended our shipping window to 20 days to give us time to solve these problems. Like the rest of the world we are hoping to get back to normal soon. Alexander Alekhine, the fourth world champion, led a colorful life. He stood six feet six inches tall, a scion of the Russian Imperial nobility. Before the outbreak of World War I he was playing in the Mannheim tournament; he was interned there by the German authorities. He escaped, returned to Russia, where he served with the Russian equivalent of the Red Cross, receiving two decorations for bravery. After the Bolshevik Revolution he was nearly executed by a firing squad but was spared by a Bolshevik commissar who recognized him. He then joined the Bolsheviks, marrying a woman named Anneliese Ruegg, a member of the Comintern. They had a son together. When Alekhine was permitted to go abroad for a tournament, he never went back, abandoning his wife and child. He settled in Paris, winning the world championship in an epic match of 34 games in 1927. He lost it 1935, and regained it 1937. He drank prodigiously and lived a scandalous life. When World War 2 broke out he joined the French Army as a translator. When the Nazis conquered France he collaborated with them as he did with the Bolsheviks. After the war he lived in penury, eventually dying--still world champion--in a lonely hotel room in Portugal. There is a police photograph showing him sitting at a table, which has a chess set on it. This is book is a fiction, a reimagining of the life of Alekhine. It is entertaining, to say the least.
