Description: Historical beauty. Lovely gown came from the estate of Martha Maxwell. Martha was an American naturalist,taxidermist and artist, she was a founder of modern taxidermy . Her displays are said to have influenced major figures in taxidermy history who entered the field later, such as William Temple Hornaday and Carl Akeley ( Father of modern taxidermy) Martha was born in 1831 in Pennsylvania. Among her many accomplishments,she is credited with being the first Woman Field Naturalist to obtain and prepare her own specimens. Martha was inducted into the Colorado Woman’s Hall of Fame in 1985. Gown still has Christie’s Auction tag attached from February 1980. Gown is in wonderful shape, a few small rust marks, the main thing is the silk bow which is torn as they do with age. Back belt looks fine, easy to make a pattern for a new one. You may need to replace a snap or two. Beautiful beautiful gown that is strong and wearable. Been in storage for Decades could use a soak to brighten up but still fabulous as is. Bust 34”. Waist 26”. Hip 66”. Length 49”. Shoulder 16”.
