Company History (summarized from The Potteries website): There seems to be some confusion between Arthur J. Wilkinson Ltd., the Company, and Royal Staffordshire, the Pottery, in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, England. Part of this confusion is likely due to the variances in backstamps, some which only reference "Royal Staffordshire" without 'Pottery' and do not include the Wilkinson name. The company, Arthur J. Wilkinson (Ltd.), actually began operations in ca. 1885, as a successor of Wilkinson & Hulme, which operated at the Central Pottery, also in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent. In about 1896 the company took over the Royal Staffordshire Pottery, Burslem and soon left the old Central works. Then in ca. 1896, the business was incorporated and marks after this date have 'LTD' in the name. In 1916, Clarice Cliff, at the age of 17, started work at Wilkinson; previously she worked for Hollinshead & Kirkham. Becoming a reknowned designer, she later became the famous designer of the modern Art Deco style "Bizarre Ware", launched in 1928, which was hand-painted. With the outbreak of World War II in 1939, creative output of the factory ceased, with much of the workforce being drafted into the Armed Forces. Wartime restrictions on decorated pottery were to continue into the 1950's and the factory was never to produce pottery in the style or quantity of the pre-war period.
