The hallmark / stamp is dented into the pottery so it is not smooth; it is rough and concave and we tried to show this in the photos (we can definitely feel it when we run our finger over the stamp) so we do believe this is authentic and an earlier item. The top looks to hold cigarettes and possibly used as such. No smells. The trinket box may have held smoke packs and/or lighters. To us, it looks like a cigarette / smoking item but can be used for display or other items. We did not clean but if someone does, be gentle with water temp and use a wet cloth to prevent harming item. Theme looks / feels Asian. Markings on the marking appear to be of the Bitossi pottery makers. This stamping believed is from circa 1950's. Item shows signs of wear. It is "dirty" and has one nick.
