VINTAGE Chaplains in Gray by Charles F. Pitts [HC,DJ,1957] 1st Edition[REVIEW] This is a unique study of the role of chaplains in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Published by Broadman Press (the Southern Baptist publishing arm) in 1957, this book not surprisingly uses somewhat flowery language of the mid 20th century, and tends to defend the Southern soldier as one who was fighting for States rights and to defend his homeland, while downplaying the significance of slavery as a cause of the Civil War. Nevertheless, there are some surprisingly good qualities to this book. It tells both positive and negative stories of chaplains, covers chaplains evenly among many denominations, and covers a range of activities, such as: how they came into the military, whether they served on the front lines or in the rear with the wounded, what they preached, how they related to soldiers, what happened when they were take as POWs, their political opinions, and how many went on to become major leaders in their denomination after the war. A short 136 pages of text (plus notes and an index list of Confederate chaplains), the book is an easy and interesting read to anybody interested in Civil War history or military chaplaincy.
