Mad e in US A. Circa late 1940s – mid 1950s. Hollow Plastic. Approx. 5-1/2 inches long. Irwin was started in the 1920s in Canada and operated mostly as an importer of US toys but they also manufactured their own designs They are, perhaps, best known for their plastic toys, games and dolls. This 5-1/2 inch dog bears the Irwin logo and “USA” under the back left leg. He is also marked “Non-Inflam” on his belly. This is a proof of safety marking that Irwin commonly put on their early plastic toys, informing parents that this toy was not made of celluloid (an early plastic used in the 1920s and ‘30s) which was prone to bursting into flames when exposed to heat. He was probably manufactured in New York and exported to Canada as well as being sold in the US. He (or she) looks like a setter dog with a long tail. The finish is molded into the plastic, not painted on and the collar is also part of the mold. Clean with no cracks or breaks.
