Description: Eldon Plastic “Eldon Attack Transport No. 912” with 4 Vehicles, Cargo Boom and Platform, Rocket-firing Gun with 4 Rockets and Climbing NetEldon Plastics, Los Angeles, CA. Made in USA. Circa 1957-1959 . Polyethylene plastic. Measures approx. 20 inches long.Eldon produced this “Attack Transport” around 1958. It is a militarized version of their Cargo Ship No. 906. Both featured opening cargo hatches, a working cargo crane, 2 lifeboats and cargoes. Both ships rolled on the floor on 2 sets of wheels and also had a sealed hull, making them a pool or tub toy.This ship is molded in olive drab/green plastic. It has a mast with a working cargo boom and platform which is in perfect condition, complete with string and functions well. It inserts into a fitting in the hull. Both sets of cargo hold doors are complete and work properly. Both lifeboats are included. The cargo is “4 Armored Vehicles” which include a tank, a truck, a Jeep and a landing craft (Higgins boat style). A cargo net for loading troops is attached to the right side of the ship. In the bow is a rocket-firing spring loaded cannon which fires 2-1/2 inch long rockets. It works perfectly. This system is similar to that used on the Eldon Sherman tank. Four (4) rockets are included. All nubs that attch the deck to the hull are intact and unbroken. The Eldon label from the ship’s bridge is on the inside of one hatch cover. The name on the bow is “USS Eldon”. This ship is missing the 4 soldiers that it came with. It has no box. Otherwise, it is complete.Polyethylene plastic was a miracle plastic of the 1950s and ‘60s, advertised as “Unbreakable” (a word Eldon used a lot) but remember, plastic production was still in its infancy, a byproduct of WWII research with many different formulas and processes. With age, Poly plastic can change and become brittle, breaking easily. Some collectors claim that long term storage , excess heat and cold and many other factors are to blame. A designer from a plastics company once told me that quality control may be to blame and perhaps the brittle items are just from a “bad batch”. Whatever the cause, older pieces commonly crack or break.This ship has a broken tab head, one of 18 that hold the deck to the hull. This seems to have created a small warp in the deck by the forward cargo hatch and a small crack on the rim of the other side of the same hatch(see photo). The hatch covers on that hatch have not been affected (see photos). Otherwise there are no other warps,cracks or breaks. The plastic is still flexible and the color is still good.
