The Ulster Knife Company was founded sometime in the early 1870’s. The company's name comes from Ulster County, New York, which in turn was named after the Irish province. In 1876, the company was purchased by Dwight Devine. In 1941, Albert M. Baer purchased the company and merged it with the Imperial Knife Company. The combined companies were then designated the Imperial Knife Associated Companies, to produce knives for the military. Records show that in August of 1973, the name of the Ulster Knife Company, Inc. was officially changed to Schrade Cutlery Corporation.
