The unit turns on and off with the use of two AA batteries. There is a worn mark by the on/off switch. Also there is a slight tear 1/4 inch on the upper right side of the vinyl case. I took a picture of the battery compartment to show very little corrosion if any. The unit does have a battery cover. Great addition to a collector's vintage assortment of calculators.
