Description: Bucolica, Georgica, et Aeneis -- Thomas Gamaliel Bradford's copy Author: Virgil Title: Bucolica, Georgica, et Aeneis -- Thomas Gamaliel Bradford's copy Publication: Paris: Didot, 1798 Description: Hardcover. Octavo, 6.25 x 4.25 inches, in handsome old dark burgundy calf binding; good copy, binding in very good condition, spine a little darkened, but lacking the frontispiece portrait of Virgil and the folding map at rear; with a number of engraved headpieces for each book, and Thomas G. Bradford's ownership signature on title page, dated 1819. Bradford (1802-87), the American cartographer who published "Atlas Designed to Illustrate the Abridgement of Universal Geography, Modern & Ancient" as well as a much admired atlas in 1835, so it is no surprise that the map is missing in this volume. Some pencil notes on terminal blanks, pencil numbers to portions of the text to serve as line-counts and a few faint pencil notes to text as well, all of which is erasable, but since they may have been the 17-year-old Bradford's own notes as he studied the texts (and perhaps it was the Aeneid, with its hero traveling the Mediterranean before landing in Italy, eventually becoming the ruler in Rome, that inspired Bradford's cartographic imagination to conceive of a universal geography both modern and ancient).
