Description: Richard Hunt was an indigenous artist in Victoria, BC, Canada and worked as the chief carver for the B.C. Provincial Museum in the mid-1900s. In 1979, Artisan Prints published 5 graphic designs as Art Cards in limited edition. Richard signed each card in pencil. This is one of those cards. Perfect for framing and display as is. The Hok-Hok is a mythological bird of the Kwakiutl Nation which was able to transform itself into several different manifestations. Contains the bird's head and wing as well as a man's face and hand. Eugene Hunt, likely related to Richard, says, "The Hok-Hok is one of several bird figures which play a role in the exclusive Hamat'sa society - a winter dance society unique to the Kwagiulth/Kwakwaka'wakw. This supernatural being is one of three main bird figures who arrive during the Hamat'sa ceremony. The remaining two creatures are Crooked-Beak-of-Heaven and Raven-at-the-North-End-of-the-World." Print measures 8 3/8" x 5 1/2". Mounted it's 9 1/4" x 6 1/4".
