I used to show extensively in galleries throughout the US, but paused my art career to raise children. Printmaking (lithography) technique: Lithography, especially when using limestone, is a traditional printmaking technique that originated in the late 18th century. Here's how the process typically works: Preparation of the Stone: The process begins with a flat piece of limestone, which is meticulously ground to create a smooth and perfectly flat surface. The quality of the stone is crucial, as it needs to have a fine, uniform texture to hold the image. Drawing the Image: The artist draws directly onto the stone using a greasy, oil-based crayon or a special lithographic ink. These materials are hydrophobic (water-repelling), which is key to the lithographic process. The drawing can be as detailed or as simple as the artist desires, and it can include a wide range of tones. In this instance, I used a paintbrush and an airbrush to create the image. Processing the Stone: Once the drawing is complete, the surface of the stone is treated with a chemical solution, usually containing gum arabic and nitric acid. This solution etches the non-image areas of the stone, making them more water-receptive and ensuring that they will repel ink, while the drawn (image) areas remain hydrophobic. Inking and Printing: The stone is first moistened with water, which is absorbed by the etched areas but repelled by the greasy drawing. An oil-based ink is then rolled over the stone. The ink sticks only to the original drawing and is repelled by the wet non-image areas. The stone is then placed on a press, and a sheet of paper is pressed against it to transfer the ink from the stone to the paper. Repetition: This inking and pressing process can be repeated multiple times, allowing for multiple reproductions of the same image. The number of prints is usually determined by the quality of the stone and the amount of pressure applied during printing, as these factors affect how long the image on the stone will last without degrading. Cleaning and Reusing: After the desired number of prints has been made, the stone can be ground down slightly to remove the old image and reused for a new artwork. Lithography is particularly valued for its ability to produce fine details and a very subtle gradation of shades, making it ideal for both artistic and textual prints. The method allows artists to draw with a variety of techniques and styles, similar to drawing on paper, which is why it has been a popular choice among artists like Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso, and Matisse.From smoke-free home.
