Description: This watercolor depicts a bright, sunny summer day on the French countryside. The color washes are quite saturated which points to the sun being more or less overhead. The eye is immediately drawn to the sitting figure with a parasol. The attire is correct for the last half of the 19th century. The work is dated 1887 next to the artist’s signature. Next the eye is drawn to the meandering path which heads toward the tree lined horizon. Perhaps she is taking a short break before continuing down the path?Born in Toulouse, France in 1848, died in 1902. He was a pupil of Lafond and studied painting under J. Andre and Cot. He was also an architect. He became a member of the Societe des Artistes Francais in 1888 and exhibited in the society's Salons. He worked in Bagneux. The work measures 15” by 21” to sight and 23.5” by 29” which are the outside measurements of the frame. The framing features a relatively new mat and features conservation glass which is noted on the verso. The frame has a crème colored stain which is also contemporary. There are a couple of minute spots to the paper in the sky but otherwise the work is in excellent condition for its age. As mentioned above the work is signed and dated on the lower right margin.
