Description: Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania Slate Pickers at Coal MineUnposted circa 1906 This is a vintage antique postcard showing breaker boys outside a anthracite coal mine having their picture taken. These young boys worked inside a anthracite coal breaker picking out the slate from the coal. It was dangerous back breaking work, working for 10 hours a day for six days a week.Beginning in the 1860's this practice of using boys between 8 and 12 years old continued until it was discontinued in the 1920's. This postcard in near fine, unposted condition with highlights in glitter. (see photos for a better idea of the condition).
