TAFT - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 05/06/1913 - HFSID 13157 WILLIAM H. TAFTAfter being a White House tenant for four years, Taft wants to rent a house near Yale for five years.Typed Letter Signed: "Wm H. Taft", 1p, 7x9¼. New Haven, Conn., 1913 May 6. Two months after leaving the White House, Taft, Professor of Law at Yale in New Haven since April 1st, writes to Lewis Sheldon Welch of New Haven about leasing a house. In full: "I beg to offer to lease your house on Prospect Street, now occupied by Mr. McHenry, for a term of five years, to begin on the first, or the 15th of September, preferably the 15th, at a rental of $2,000 a year, payable monthly. You are to put the house in proper repair for our occupancy, and thereafter we are to make all the inside repairs, you to agree to keep the roof and the exterior of the house in proper condition. I should be glad to hear from you in the course of the next few days." Taft taught at Yale until 1921, when he was appointed Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court by President Harding.
