Description: A wooden sculpture purchased in 2000 by the collector at the Heard Museum in Phoenix Arizona. - This figure with arms raised straight upwards is painted in black and white .. with zigzag patterns of dots and withle outlined black zigzags with crosses, dotted lines ect inside the black areas. Navajo sculptures often depict people/standing animals etc with arms upraised. It is 3 feet (36") high, about 7.5" across and about 3" at deepest, (center). It is very weathered on the back, rounded - as if it were cut from the log and this is the outside edge... There is a wire attached at top back to hang this. I recall sometime mid 1990's seeing similarly painted smaller wooden figures that were 3 dimensional - These had black masks over their faces made out of t- shirt material. And they were black with similar black & whitedesigns on their torsos - including crosses - they had small rough wooden crosses with the horizontal part high on the vertical part as is here. ... some in their hands, some on headdresses --- These were made by 2 brothers, of Navajo & White Mountain Apache heritage and the figures were White Mountain apache Mountain Spirits. -- When the "Mountain Spirit" dance is performed, the dancers are masked, paint their bodies black with designs on their torsos and wear crowns - somewith crosses. ---- I am wondering if perhaps this is a piece by one of those brothers... I can not remember their names - If someone knows their names .... or if someone recognizes this piece and knows more about it ... PLEASE contact me w/that info. In photos .. there is a picture showing a regular size paperback book at the bottom of this piece - for scale.... And on the back there is a white label which had former owner's name ... I blurred that and will remove label prior to shipping. Finally last photo in slideshow is of the artist's signature... I can not read it.. Top name seems to begin with ROG??? Can't make out bottom name at all.. Maybe one of you will be able to see it? If so - again PLEASE contact me. Collected in 2000.
