In 1943 he is assigned to an artillery unit. After several moves he is sent to the 16th Field Artillery Observation battalion. This is a specialized unit and did not fire guns The unit was involved in taking equipment to the forward areas and with sound and flash detecting devises detected German artillery fire so that their location could be figured out and counter-artillery fire delivered. Soon after D-Day this unit, part of the VIII Corps is sent via Utah beach to Brittany The 16th FA are involved in the 8th Corps Campaign in Brittany Later the VIII Corps is sent to the Ardennes region before the offensive The VIII Corps is hit hard by the initial thrust of the Battle of the Bulge. The GI continues with this unit to the end of the war the VIII Corps is attached to several different US Armies during its combat tour. After the war this GI became a Kansas politician and Senator.
