Description: A superb & heavy piece of British Trench Art from the Allied Trenches of Eastern Europe in the shape of a hand-made Splayed Flower Vase fashioned from an Artillery 75-mm casing commemorating Allied Victory over The Central Powers in The Balkans in 1918. In a little-known side-show to the Great War breaking out on the Western Front of France & Belgium in 1914, to the East of Europe, Serbia, Albania & Montenegro were being attacked & overrun by Bulgaria and her allies in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and The Central Powers. However, in 1915, a multi-national military force known as the ‘Allied Army of the Orient’ was sent to the Balkans, the British contingent under the command ofLt General Milne. With a total force eventually growing to some 200,000 men, (known as the British Salonika Force or BSF) from 1915 to 1918, the BSF regularly took the fight to Bulgaria and her Allies in the Balkan theatre of operations. After a long & harsh campaign, resulting in the Allied troops suffering alternately from heat-stroke and then the intense cold, in the final weeks of the war, between September 29th & November 11th 1918, Bulgaria was finally defeated and Serbia, Albania & Montenegro were liberated from The Central Powers’ occupation, with the hitherto powers of Austro-Hungary & Turkey severely weakened as a result. However, despite these Allied military successes in the East in 1918, this Balkans War remains below the radar today! Nicely crafted and etched from an unidentified 1915-dated 75mm brass casing, (now identified as a 75mm Puteaux Model 1897..thanks Ian!) the front bears the upper-case legend BALKANS 1918 Measuring some 9" high & 3.5" at its base this is a really cracking-looking Allied souvenir of The Great War in The East Thanks for looking..!
