Description: An intriguing WW2 USAAF map of "BERLIN" with OPERATIONAL MARKINGS, the survey for which was borrowed from a British RAF sheet from the GSGS 4072 Series entitled EUROPE (AIR). Of particular note is the US production footnotes as it references the WDMC and the OCE with a date of 1941. As War loomed for the United States the WDMC (War Department Map Collection) began to source existing editions from other Governments. The OCE (Office of Chief Engineers) would appear to have been tasked with the production. The USAAF didn't take part in a major bombing raid over Berlin until March 1944, which tallies up nicely with a note on the back which reads "Berlin 1944". However, by then, all the USAAF maps I've ever seen feature the month of printing as well as the year, so it would appear that this map may have been an early example which was used years later. This is supported by the printed note in the top margin which reads "ADVANCE EDITION - SUBJECT TO CORRECTION". The US didn't join the War until December 1941. Perhaps not surprisingly, this is the only US version of this map I've ever seen. The OPERATIONAL MARKINGS consist of a pencil marked flightpath approaching Berlin from the West via a town called 'Kyritz' before passing directly over Central Berlin. The return journey would have started to 'double back' once the aircraft was through the Anti-Aircraft concentrations around the city, and would therefore have been marked on an adjoining sheet. In excellent condition for its age and service use. Will be shipped as per its existing fold lines. Please see my other WW2 (and WW1) maps, photos, documents etc (Seller's Ref - WES0824 / 16)
