When was the last time you saw a 1944-dated Canister? For every hundred '1945' dated examples, only one '1944' dated canister is encountered today on the market. This is one is in handsome "Combat Serviceable" condition! + This is "Bayonet F" Canister. This STORAGE/CARRYING CANISTER (which could double as Cooking Pots) which was manufactured and issued SEPARATELY!! This example is what the early 1944-dated M1942-MOD. stoves would have been carried in-- if not in the Mountain Cookset. + Veterans report that the LARGER 3-Piece Mountain Cooksets were the preferred CARRIERS for this single-burner gas M-1942 MOD. Stove. At the 'taller' setting this Canister can also accommodate the very tall, cumbersome, and very heavy earlier Stove with the green painted tank. + ZERO significant dents or deformation! But the usual uniform 'scuffing,' scrapes, and superficial corrosion, inside and out. In short, the finish shows the authenticating 'patina' of REAL "in-theater use"!+ The two 'pots' join together and rotate into the 'locking' position. The bottom pot is stamped on the bottom: U.S. C. M. MFG. CO. 1944 + I believe "C. M. MFG. CO." is the Chapman Manufacturing Company of Durham, CT, a tool maker, established in 1936 or an older Chapman Manufacturing Company of Meriden, CT dating to the late 19C that produced a line of agricultural implements, bike frames, and metal lamps. Since Durham and Meriden are situated only 8 miles apart, I suspect that they are the same, the former being the current incarnation of the WWII contractor + Dimensions (closed at the shortest height): 7" x 4-1/4"+ These aluminum Canisters are difficult to find separate from the Stoves, but 1944-dated Canisters are NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE to find!!!
